The Author presents a conference held at the Convention on the theme: Self-government in the Future of Boys Town, held in Rome on February 20, 2009. It revisits the method that Msgr. John Patrick Carroll-Abbing wished to be used at Boys Town, a reality he himself founded just after World War II to give a home, a family, and work to many orphaned and abandoned boys. This conference reviews the stages that brought the founder to choose self-government as a means of educating the boys to responsibility; shows the potential and modes of actualization; and uncovers the presuppositions which make this method efficacious for the well-rounded education of young citizens.

L'Autrice presenta la relazione tenuta al Convegno di studio sul tema: L’autogoverno nel futuro della Città dei Ragazzi, celebratesi a Roma il 20 febbraio 2009. Essa rivisita il metodo voluto da mons. John Patrick Carroll-Abbing nelle Città dei Ragazzi da lui fondate dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, per dare una casa, una famiglia, un lavoro a tanti ragazzi orfani o sbandati. L’intervento, ripercorrendo le tappe che hanno portato il fondatore a scegliere l'autogoverno per educare i ragazzi alla responsabilità, ne valorizza potenzialità e modalità di attuazione, insieme ai presupposti che lo rendono efficace per una piena educazione dei giovani cittadini.
